Sunday dinner was something that my parents swore by. It didn’t matter what you had going on, you came by the house and shared a meal with your family. Even if my father was out of town or one of us didn’t make it, you could always swing by the Vanducci estate and there would be a warm meal waiting on you. Since having Ravi, I had missed Sunday dinners. My mom always made sure she stopped by Monday afternoon with food she saved for me. This was the first Sunday that I was going, and I was kind of excited.

I enjoyed being surrounded by my family. For the few hours I spent at my parents’ house, I didn’t have to be a mom. Somebody would snatch Ravi away, and I wouldn’t see him until they were buckling him up in the backseat before we left. Today, I needed that break away from everything that I had going on. I just wanted to laugh, eat good food and maybe sneak in a glass of wine.

Lark leaned up from the bed and yawned. “Damn, you making hella noise,” he complained.

I paced in front of the bed while breastfeeding our son at the same time. “Maybe if you would have his stuff together here, I wouldn’t need to shuffle through everything.”

Nothing was unpacked in Lark’s house. All the things we got from the baby shower, or the things I bought, were still in their original packaging. It was like he didn’t even give a damn to make this his son’s home, too.

“I don’t know how to put all that shit together. You had Wahkeem help you at your house… stop acting like you all handy and shit.”

Rolling my eyes, I continued to bounce my son while he happily nursed.

“Wahkeem shouldn’t have had to put stuff together… that’s your job,” I mumbled.

“What?”

“Nothing,” I replied, too tired to argue with him.

Why was I so stupid for this man? When he called me at ten at night and asked us to come over, I should have hung the phone up. What man makes his girlfriend travel to him with their four-month-old baby? Since I was so desperate for Ravi and his father to have that bond, I packed our stuff and came over.

“You coming back over here or going home?” Lark yawned.

“Going home. Star is coming over to spend the night with me.”

He scoffed. “Don’t be leaving her ass alone with my son.”

The nerve of him to bark orders on who could or couldn’t watch the son he never fucking watched.

“She’s watching him so we can go on a double date with Wahkeem and Arika.”

He was now leaned all the way up. “The fuck, Lennon?”

“We never double date with them.”

“For a reason… I don’t like that nigga.”

Lark disliked Wahkeem because Wah was everything he wasn’t. Soon as Wah entered a room, his presence commanded everyone’s attention. While Lark was handed everything he could have ever wanted, Wahkeem wasn’t. All of his success was due to his hard work and getting it out of the mud.
